When the NCAA approved NIL (the use of an athlete’s Name, Image, and Likeness through marketing and promotional endeavors), enabling college athletes to make money from endorsements and sponsorships, the Sumner Group knew it had a natural tie-in to provide athletes with public relations and marketing services.


Sumner Sports provides NIL services to college athletes, including endorsements, media relations, event promotions, social media management, and branding.

For over 40 years, the Sumner Group has excelled in conceptualizing and coordinating sports marketing, public relations, and fundraising events with and for college athletes. The agency coordinated the annual ACC All-Star Senior Tour (aka ACC Barnstorming Tour) with senior basketball players across North Carolina.


This series of events contributed to unique ties between the Sumner Group and several athletic departments throughout the state, including those at Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, and UNC-Chapel Hill. In addition, the Sumner Group also founded and promoted the annual D3 Tournament at the famed Rucker Park in Harlem, NY. The agency also assisted in establishing the Phil Ford Basketball Foundation.
