Born in 1884, E.D. “Pet” Sumner grew up on a farm outside of Hartsville, S.C. He traveled on the White Star Line to Europe in 1925 and 1927 to sell southern textiles to buyers in France and Scotland.
Pet moved to North Carolina in 1929 and established Sumner Cotton Company. In 1934, he journeyed to Egypt and was among the first Americans to openly trade in the Middle East.
