Tarboro, N.C., July 22, 2014 – Telco Credit Union based in Tarboro, NC announced today they will begin construction on a full service office in Greenville at 631 East Arlington Blvd. Along with the opening of the Pitt County location, which will be the first branch for the credit union since its founding in 1941, they also introduced a new brand and position line.
“We are very excited about celebrating the opening of our Greenville office and the new location enables us to enhance service to our members in Greenville and the surrounding area” commented Charles Johnson, President and CEO of Telco. He continued, “We have been reviewing cities all over eastern North Carolina for over a year and the Greenville market was a perfect match for us. We have an excellent base of members in Pitt County. Greenville is the type market that appreciates the value of an independent credit union.” Johnson concluded, “ Our convenient location will enable us to serve our current members, as well as, recruit new members to our family.”
Telco announced a partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville for membership in their organization. “We are excited about offering membership in our credit union to anyone who makes a contribution of $25 or more to the Friends of the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville,” says Johnson. He continued, “It is that easy and it cannot go to a better cause.”
Telco is one of the state’s oldest credit unions formed in 1941, when nineteen honest, hardworking Carolina Telephone employees met in Tarboro to form Telco Credit Union. With these sound financial principles and an eye on the future the not-for-profit financial institution now serves over 8,300 members in eastern North Carolina. “Profits are returned to members and are reflected in our ability to pay higher dividends on savings, offer lower interest rates on loans and provide expanded products and services at less cost.” said Johnson.
“Telco will add seven new jobs to the local workforce and the building, designed by The East Group in Greenville, will be 5,000 square feet. Carl Rees, Economic Development Officer, and his staff was essential in providing invaluable demographic information and available building sites. We had seriously considered other locations and other communities but his insights really impacted our decision to choose this location.” He continued, “We also appreciate the Chamber’s warm welcome and look forward to taking our place here in Greenville and taking an active part in this vibrant community.”
Telco will offer personal checking and savings, auto, boat, motorcycle and personal loans. CD’s, IRA’s and money market accounts will also be available at this location. June Carlisle, Director of Member Services commented “We plan to offer a wide array of variable and fixed rate home equity loans as well as primary mortgage loans,” she continued, “We offer flexible terms and competitive interest rates, that correspond with the variety of our member’s needs.”
Telco plans to break ground this fall and open in the spring of 2015.
Telco also unveiled a new logo and position line. The new logo features “coastal colors and a speech bubble” evoking the roots of Carolina Telephone while representing the individuality of each member. The position line, “you can belong here” calls to mind a sense of community while communicating a sense of belonging. A new campaign is planned for the fall with the office on East Arlington featuring the same colors and style.
The office hours are:
• Monday- Thursday 8:30am – 5:00pm
• Friday 8:30 – 6:00PM

It’s been a busy year for us here at The Sumner Group, and we’re excited to be adding to our diverse roster of clients.
Founded in 1941, Telco Credit Union is one of North Carolina’s oldest credit unions. From its humble beginnings as a 19-member collective, Telco has grown to service thousands of members in eastern North Carolina. As part of their continued growth and service to the community, Telco began plans to open a new branch in Greenville. The time was right to re-think their identity, brand positioning and marketing strategies.
The Sumner Group was hired to bring a fresh viewpoint to the above facets of Telco’s presence in the marketplace, starting with a new logo and position line.
Telco’s new logo features coastal colors and a speech bubble evoking the roots of Carolina Telephone while representing the individuality of each member. The position line, “you can belong here” calls to mind a sense of community while communicating a sense of belonging.
